A characteristic mountain village with less than 500 residents, Volturara Appula stretches out along a hill, close to the River Fortore, 50km from Foggia.
Once a bishop’s seat, Volturara conserves examples of elegant Romanesque architecture, such as the 13th century Cathedral with multi-coloured altar and the paintings of St. Peter and St. Paul. An imposing bell tower dominates the sky, with the 16th century Palazzo Ducale standing close by.
Close to both Campania and Molise, Volturara has an excellent strategic position and enjoys exceptional natural resources, where the south-western wind (libeccio) blows incessantly. The healthy air, the peaceful village, the sulphur springs and the lush green of Forest of Volturara make it particularly popular with lovers of the outdoors.
