Ostuni in the province of Brindisi is also known as the White City, because the characteristic old town was once entirely whitewashed with lime, although this is only partially the case today. It is considered the gateway to Salento.
At its heart is the 15th-century Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, whose façade features a large 24-spoked rose window of rare beauty.
The countryside of Ostuni, is strewn with large farming estates (masserie), including Santa Caterina with its tall octagonal tower rising up from the fortified estate, Lo Spagnulo, and the Masseria Cappuccini with its trulli (traditional cone-shaped houses). Many others have been converted into small rural hotels or luxury resorts.
