Belfort Castle, in the municipality of Spormaggiore (Trento), was founded in 1311 when Enrico I count of Tirolo granted authorisation to build a structure comprising a tower and adjacent buildings.
The structure’s medieval characteristics were reduced when the Saracini counts rebuilt it in 1670, following a ruinous fire that destroyed the original. The castle changed hands many times over the centuries which contributed to its decline. Today it is mostly in ruins, with only remains of the rectangular perimeter walls and the battlemented tower now equipped with a metal structure to allow visitor to climb up to about halfway.
