The mountain of San Paolino, 800m high, dominates the small medieval borgo of Sutera (CL). The Chiaramonte family built a sanctuary in 1370 on the rock, above an ancient Byzantine castle. Adjacent to the church is a small convent of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri dating to the 1700s.
The historical centre of the borgo has three neighbourhoods: Rabato, Rabatello, Giardiniello. Ancient Rabato of Arab origin is a labyrinth of small alleyways and the location for the Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria Assunta. It is particularly lively during the Christmas season when there is a live Nativity tableau.
The main square is the location for the town hall and the Romanesque Church of St. Agatha, rebuilt in the 1700s. Other areas of interest in Sutera include the Museo Etnoantropologico, located in the Convent of the Carmelite Fathers and the archaeological site of San Marco, one kilometre from the centre.
