Symbol of the region of Piedmont, and inspiration for Umberto Eco’s best-selling The Name of the Rose, the Sacra di San Michele is an ancient abbey built between 983 and 987 on the summit of monte Pirchiriano 40 km from Turin.
Its towers provide a view over the capital city of Piedmont and the stunning landscape of Val di Susa. The 12th century Principal Church of the Sacra houses the tombs of several members of the Royal house of Savoy. Dedicated to Michael the Archangel, defender of Christians, the Sacra di San Michele is part of a pilgrim route that stretches over 2,000 km from Mont Saint-Michel in France to Monte Sant’Angelo in Apulia.
