Corigliano d’Otranto is located in a strip of land in the heart of the Salento region whose roots go back to ancient Greece. The town, 25 km from Lecce, was awarded the prestigious Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. The Byzantine origins of this Greek-speaking town echo off the names of the streets and in the stories of the few who still speak the griko language, an ancient Greek dialect. The town tells the stories of ladies and knights, castles and battles, from the times when Corigliano belonged to the De’ Monti and later (17th century) to the Trane families. Both families modified the manor: from impregnable fortress, it became a beautiful noble palace, with a Baroque façade.
The town’s historical centre, embellished with courtyard houses, typical of the area, which line Via San Nicola, leading to the 18th-century church with a beautiful carved portal, dedicated to the patron Saint, is magical. The folds of the past also envelop the love story told in the Byzantine symbols that express the love of a man for his bride which are carved into stone of the elegant Lucchetti Arch, which dates to 1497 and stands over the entrance to a small courtyard.
