In the Middle Ages, the Castle of Garagnone played an important role in the territory of Alta Murgia during the Norman reign of the Altavilla family. Partially destroyed by the 1731 earthquake, the manor can be called an invisible castle because it has been built in the same stone as the high plain which makes it hard to spot.
Documentation about the Fortress dates to the mid-12th century when it is recorded as belonging to the Count of Andria Ruggero. Emperor Henry VI made it public property and later it was ceded to the military religious order of the Gerosolomitani di Barletta.
During the reign of Emperor Frederick II, the manor was restructured and registered as a domus, which indicated its role in managing an extremely fruitful area for cereal production and animal husbandry in the Territory of Bari.
