The austere De Viti de Marco Castle, one of the most elegant and prestigious historical residences of Salento, overlooks the main square of the ancient village of Casamassella, which belongs to the municipality of Uggiano La Chiesa, 3 km from Otranto. The castle was built in the 1200s as a fortified residence during the reign of Charles of Anjou and became a noble palace in 1700 at which time the balconies and windows were added.
The superb façade has a magnificent corbelled balcony set in an arch-shaped niche above the central door. The inner courtyard offers a view of the fascinating internal perspective which has been carefully restored while maintaining its original look. Medieval pointed arches and 18th century architectural elements combine harmoniously to create an evocative and elegant setting which leads to a Mediterranean garden with a striking colonnade of pergolas. Wide arched windows lead into the reception rooms of the palace.
