Designed by Enrico Del Debbio, the Mussolini Forum in Rome was built between 1931-33 and was renamed the Foro Italico in 1950. The complex, which includes stadiums, swimming pools, courts and pitches, features, on the flat, a magnificent stadium in Carrara marble (16,000 spectator capacity) with the wooded slopes of Monte Mario behind. Crowning the upper ring are 64 statues of athletes in sporting poses. Facing the entrance is the Monolite, an obelisk gifted by the city of Carrara. In 2013, the stadium used mostly for athletics was named after Pietro Mennea, the Italian sprinter who held the 200m flat world record for 17 years.
Over the years the Foro Italico complex has become an integral part of the urban fabric of Rome, nestled between the Della Vittoria neighbourhood and the Farnesina building, the Vigna Clara neighbourhood and the Cassia consular road, on the right bank of the River Tiber.
