Located on a bay in the Volturno River, Capua was the most important city in the Terra di Lavoro, a geographical-historical region known in ancient times as the Campania Felix. Its residential centre is filled with medieval monuments and buildings, pre-Roman ruins – such as the Matres Matutae in the Museo Campano – and Roman remains, such as the decorations on the municipal offices, the stones in Norman Castle and the ruins of the Temple to Diana in the hamlet of Sant’Angelo in Formis. The monuments, palaces and churches bear witness to the leading role that the town held through history: the remains of the bridge over the Volturno is the main Roman artefact in Capua and aligns with the gate to the road for Rome; the Castello delle Pietre, founded in the 11th century by the Normans, adapted and repurposed many times (for defensive, military, residential uses), today preserves the remains of the city wall, part of the main building and a square tower in tuff rock.
