The town of Pozzuoli (NA) is located in the volcanic area of the Phlegraean Fields. Given this position, the territory here has always been subject to Bradyseism – the rising and falling of the earth – which in the 1980s “repositioned” the harbour of Pozzuoli further forward, by 50m, than it had been previously. A Mediterranean harbour for ancient Rome, the city conserves many historical sites from the era, including the Flavian Amphitheatre and the Macellum, the market building for the Roman city, misidentified as the Temple of Serapis following the discovery of a statue of the Egyptian god there.
