The territory of Castellabate extends from the small historical centre that rises near Castello dell’Abate to the coastal hamlets of Santa Maria, San Marco and Ogliastro Marina. The area is part of the National Park del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni, while the marine areas make up the Protected Marine Area of Santa Maria di Castellabate.
The characteristic porto “delle Gatte” apparently takes its name from the particular shape of the illuminated colonnades, which resemble cats’ eyes from the sea. In 2010, the town was the setting for Luca Miniero’s film Benvenuti al Sud which not only gave visibility to the area, but also revived Joachim’s Murat’s famous phrase “This is no place to die”.
