The village of Sasso di Castalda (PZ) gets its name from the Latin Saxum because it was positioned on a large rocky mass. The little stone houses are bona-fide works of art themselves with splendid flower-decorated balconies opening onto alleyways which offer wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
There are ruins of what is locally known as the ‘castle’, although it was actually a look-out tower built on a large rock unsuitable for habitation. The little trail along the edge of the Fosso leads past the votive chapel to the Madonna della Grazie to the edge of the surprising Ponte alla Luna in 10 minutes. At 102m above the river, the single 300m stretch of the Ponte alla Luna offers an experience that is akin to literally walking through the air. It leads to the ruins of the castle that dominates the village from a hilltop. Having crossed the bridge, a glass platform offers the opportunity to contemplate the bridge along with a moment of respite. A vantage point on the ruins of the medieval castle has a rotating binocular that offers a 360° view of the surrounding mountains.
