Brienza (PZ) still conserves many traces of medieval architecture including the concentric arrangement of the houses around Caracciolo Castle, the Angevin fortress on the hilltop. The town is full of narrow alleyways, niches carved out of the rock and simple residences alternating with noble buildings. The via degli Archi is particularly unusual, an alleyway tightly filled with pointed arches that almost blocks the sunlight. The main square, piazza del Municipio, features a bronze monument dedicated to the lawyer and patriot Mario Pagano, the Municipal offices in the buildings that were previously the Convent of the Frati Minori Osservanti and the Church of our Lady of the Annunciation.
