The elongated municipality of Pisticci is located in the centre-south of the province of Matera and is also known as the “balcony” or “amphitheatre on the Ionian Sea” because of its dominant position on the coastline and the S shape of the residential centre. Pisticci comprises various hamlets including Casinello, Centro Agricolo, Marconia, Pisticci Scalo, Tinchi and the seaside resort of Marina di Pisticci.
Built amidst the hills of Serra Cipolla, San Francesco and Monte Como, the borgo of Pisticci is divided into 16 neighbourhoods, enclosing numerous historical residences, churches and defensive structures. Particularly worthy of note is the Dirupo neighbourhood with its red-roofed white houses arranged on multiple levels, included in the list of “100 Meraviglie d’Italia da salvaguardare (100 Italian Marvels to safeguard)”. The area is prone to landslides, given the clay-like nature of the soil and the presence of badlands (calanchi).
The highest and most ancient part of Pisticci is the Terravecchia neighbourhood which features the ruins of the Norman era castle including its square tower, the ancient village gate, Chiesa Madre and various historical residences. In the hamlet of Marconia, the Castle of San Basilio was built in the 7th century as a fortified farmhouse, later becoming a Norman fortress with a tower and central courtyard surrounded by various buildings.
