A hilltop village not far from the sea, Tursi (MT) extends out over more than 16,000 hectares. The ancient borgo, the Rabatana, dates to the 5th century CE and is surrounded by ravines: fosso della Palmara to the North, fosso di San Francesco to the East and fosso della Cattedrale to the West. The Rabatana neighbourhood was the inspiration for the poetry of Albino Pierro who came from Tursi. The streets of the primordial settlement are still accessible as are the ruins of ancient residences, often a single room on a single storey. Over the centuries, the borgo extended into the valley below the Rabatana taking on an elongated shape.
The residential centre stands less than 20km from the Ionian coastline. The Pescogrosso river, whose name derives from the enormous rocks found along its route, begins at a source to the east of Tursi, descending the hill to divide the city longitudinally.
