Dominating the valley of the Basento river, Ferrandina (MT) owes its name to Frederick of Aragon who rebaptized the town in 1494 to honour his father Ferrante.
The residential centre is clearly outlined by numerous narrow houses in pale colours which are positioned next to each other as if in a mosaic and connected by stairways. The narrow alleys of the town include ancient noble residences and churches, including the Chiesa Madre di Our Lady of the Cross in central Piazza del Plebiscito which dates to 1490 and has 16th century portals and three Byzantine cupolas.
Not far from town are the ruins of the Castle of Uggiano, a Byzantine military stronghold that rose on the site of the ancient Obelanon, the original settlement for the town of Ferrandina.
