Brunico Castle stands in plain sight on a hill overlooking the city. It was built in 1250 by the Prince Bishop of Bressanone, Bruno von Kirchberg. The castle has had various uses over the centuries, resulting in renovations and extensions. Extensive renovation work was carried out at the end of the 19th century.
Reinhold Messner inaugurated a mountain museum, one of six in total, here in 2011. Surrounded by farmsteads, the Messner Mountain Museum Ripa is dedicated to the mountain peoples, of Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. In the Tibetan language, in fact, "ri" means mountain and "pa" man.
Access to the castle is through the south door, where a drawbridge was once located. In the courtyard, a circular tower has a staircase leading to the upper floors with the bishop's rooms and a small chapel. On the right are the bishops' quarters, on the left the administrator's apartments and the staff quarters.
