The monumental building of the Scuola della Misericordia in Sestiere di Cannaregio, whose original structure dates to 1583, is an unusual space for Venice, unique in its dimensions and spaces. With a surface area of 2,000 sqm, the building is today an exhibition centre offering 26,000 sqm of space over two storeys which offer an unparalleled flexibility of use.
It has a rectangular layout and reaches significant heights, following the canons of Roman and classical basilicas. The three-storey, brick facade no longer has its stone covering. The first level dialogues with that above, both featuring semi-circular Gothic niches with rounded arches that divide the space into three parts.
The ground floor, approx. 900 sqm, features an entirely modulable hall, that can host several events at the same time. A monumental staircase with a rounded arch leads to the upper floor which houses the sala dei Confratelli, an airy space of approx. 1,000 sqm which is characterised by the total absence of pilasters and by 12 rounded arch centred windows.
