Palazzo Barbieri, on the eastern side of piazza Bra in Verona, is also known as the Palazzo del Comune as it has housed the town hall since 1874. The imposing Neo-Classical building, inspired by ancient Roman temples, was built between 1836 and 1848 by architect Giuseppe Barbieri for military purposes when Verona belonged to the Austrian Empire. The façade has a colonnade, a Corinthian pronaos and a large triangular pediment.
The tapestry hall houses two masterpieces from the late 1500s: La vittoria dei Veronesi a Vaccaldo su Federico Barbarossa by Paolo Farinati, and Cena in casa Levi or Cena in casa del Fariseo, by the workshop of “Il Veronese” Paolo Caliari, recently attributed by critics to Benedetto and Carletto Caliari. The sala del consiglio houses Vittoria dei Veronesi sui Benacesi by Felice Riccio (“Brusasorzi”) and a fresco, Cristo crocefisso tra la Madonna e San Giovanni, by an unknown painter.
