Palazzo della Ragione, today the civic museum of Verona, is a majestic building on a quadrangular layout, with an inner courtyard surrounded by a portico dating to the late 12th century. It was the seat of political power for centuries and later served as the courthouse.
The complex comprises: the palace, symbol of political power; the 84m Lamberti tower, symbol of temporal power; the decorated jewel box that is Cappella dei Notai; and the scala della Ragione, a late Gothic, 15th century treasure in Veronese red marble located to the right of the Cortile del Mercato Vecchio.
The Cortile del Mercato Vecchio is surrounded by a portico with rounded arches, supported by ashlar work pilasters, its characteristic colouring derives from alternating courses of brick and tuff.
The Scala della Ragione leads to the great entrance on the piano nobile, providing access to the present-day Achille Forti Gallery of Modern Art, whose collection is dedicated to the visual arts of the 19th and 20th centuries.
