The Villa Bassi Rathgeb Museum in Abano Terme (Padua) is housed in the 16th century villa built between 1566 and 1576 by Giovanni Antonio Secco, a doctor from Crema. Stretching from the splendid loggia, the original entrance to the villa, the piano nobile is filled with the frescoes typical of a Venetian villa, exalting the triumph of conjugal love and the superiority of art, music and learning through myths and religious scenes.
The building was purchased by the Municipality of Abano in 1979 to house the art collection donated by the illustrious Bergamo collector Roberto Bassi Rathgeb. Its recovery began in 1995, along with restoration of the internal decoration. The wide-ranging collection illustrates the encyclopaedic taste of the 19th century with over 450 pieces including paintings, drawings, engravings/etchings, miniatures, sculptures, furnishings, furniture, weapons and armour, archaeological artefacts.
