Castell'Arquato (Piacenza), located in the Val d'Arda foothills, is characterized by a medieval borgo perched on the hill overlooking the valley.
The Rocca di Castell'Arquato stands on the rocky tuff promontory, which rises steep over the river. For centuries, the presence of the Arda river, which extends up these hills to Niviano di Lugagnano, forced the men heading up the valley towards the Apennines to pass through the village and then continue along the coast, or, when the weather permitted, to continue on the "road" route between the hillside and the riverbank.
From the 15th century up to the Unification of Italy, the borgo was alternately dominated by Sforza family of Milan and the Sforza family of Santa Fiora, who placed Castell'Arquato under the jurisdiction of the ducal House of Farnesiana, and later the duchy of Parma. This succession of political and military events featured distinguished Captains of Arms. Castell'Arquato was later part of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza from the 18th Century until the Unification of Italy.
