Carmelo “Mimì” Mardocheo (Giancarlo Giannini) lives in Catania with his wife Rosalia (Agostina Belli): this is where most of the film was shot, including several scenes set in the outer suburbs of Turin. Locations in the capital of the Piedmont region included the Market of Porta Palazzo in piazza della Repubblica, where Mimì meets Fiore (Mariangela Melato) and begins to flirt with her; Parco del Valentino where he is first rejected and wanders unhappily (the Arch of Triumph can be glimpsed in a frame); and piazza San Carlo where the two, finally in love, wander.
Presumed loyal to the Mafia, Mimì returns to Catania and starts living a double life, juggling wife and mistress. When, in a cave in Augusta (SR), his friends tell him that Rosalia is having an affair, an enraged Mimì decides to get revenge by compromising Amalia (Elena Fiore), the wife of the man who has made Rosalia pregnant. The courtship unfolds in the streets of Catania, including in via dei Crociferi, and when Amalia eventually gives in, their first meeting takes place near the Chiostro di Levante in the Benedictine Monastery in piazza Dante. After flirting ferociously with her, Mimì manages to seduce her, dragging her to a hut in Priolo Gargallo (SR) on the isthmus that links land and salt flats on the island of Thapsos.
