Serra San Bruno (province of Vibo Valentia) is located in the Ancinale valley on the slopes of mount Pecoraio, at 790m above sea level. It has both a historical centre, Terravecchia, and a more recent neighbourhood, Spinetto, built after the 1783 earthquake with the assistance of local wood and marble artisans who embellished the new buildings and numerous churches using local materials.
The village originated with Bruno of Cologne, founder of the Carthusian Order, who received the Serre Calabre plateau territory from Roger I of Sicily and built the Charterhouse of St. Stephen and St. Bruno in 1091 there, the first Carthusian convent in Italy. The charterhouse complex comprises various areas today: the new monastic church, the private chapels, great cloister, 14 cells, clock tower, guest area, refectory, chapterhouse, a library with 25,000 volumes and the Chapel of Relics.
