The town of Morano (province of Cosenza), an important residential centre in the Parco nazionale del Pollino, rises on a hill about 700 m above sea level with a panorama over the river Coscile valley. The residential centre, with wide staircases, simple houses and noble palaces, descends from the Norman castle (12th-13th century) to the valley in a labyrinth of alleyways, encircled by a system of protective walls.
The late Gothic, 15th century Church of San Bernardino da Siena is a key monument: its façade has an ogival portal in yellow stone while its interior conserves a valuable ship’s keel roof in wood, the only one of its kind in Calabria, and a Polyptych by Bartolomeo Vivarini, painted in Murano in 1477. In the Lauri neighbourhood, the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas comprises two buildings: the upper dating to the 1400s with a Baroque aspect, the lower older in date. Places of worship include: the ancient Collegiate of St. Peter and St. Paul, dating to 1000 C.E. with two marble statues by Pietro Bernini and the Church of St. Mary Magdalen with cupola and bell tower decorated in yellow and blue tiles.
