The little village of Soriano Calabro (province of Vibo Valentia) is located in the valle del Mesima, in the heart of the Serre Calabre. Its origins date to the founding of the Convent of Dominican Fathers in 1510. Earthquakes, the latest in 1783, damaged the complex which once comprised 5 cloisters and a church (4 bays long with 6 side chapels) leaving only imposing ruins today.
The present-day late Baroque Convent of St. Dominic was built in the 1800s, on a more modest scale from one of the old cloisters, it conserves a statue of St. Dominic carved from a lime tree trunk by local sculptor Giuseppe Ruffo.
Places of interest in the village include the Cathedral of St. Mary Major, the Church of St. Martin the Bishop in via della Repubblica and the Church of Our Lady of Carmel in via Garibaldi. Civil architecture of note includes the biblioteca calabrese, dedicated to the region with 30,000 volumes about Calabria, and Mumar - Museo dei marmi, which displays marble works from the ancient Dominican monastery, by 18th century artists.
