The borgo of Maierà (province of Cosenza) extends along a rocky spur on the left flank of the Vaccuta river valley, at an altitude of 360m. The village, which falls inside the Parco nazionale del Pollino, is separated from the neighbouring village of Grisolia by the vallata dei Mulini, whose name derives from the numerous stone mills that drove the local economy in the past and whose remains can still be seen from piazza antica.
The centre of Maierà, with its narrow alleyways and charming vignettes, has many historical buildings such as the Ducal Palace, the 13th century Mother Church or Church of Our Lady del Piano and the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, not far from the residential centre.
The hollowed rock caves of San Domenico in the San Domenico area are partly natural and partly manmade and were inhabited by a community of eastern Basilian monks between the 6th and 7th centuries and later used as a necropolis.
Maierà is also known for its museum of chili pepper, the only one of its kind dedicated to the plant.
