The fatherless little girl is being raised by her paternal grandparents (Giovanna Ralli, Umberto Orsini) in the building next to the one where her mother lives. Garbatella, which offers a microcosm of colourful buildings where everyone knows each other, is also the backdrop to the scene of a furious argument between the girl and her mother (Alba Rohrwacher); a street artist, the woman is deeply attached to Marcel, the little dog who is her partner in life and work, initially appearing more attentive and fond of her canine companion than her daughter.
Scenes were also filmed in the province of Latina, in particular on the stretch of coast near Capoportiere, where mother and daughter scan the horizon across the sea, intrigued as they watch kites rising into the sky.
