A poor carpenter named Geppetto lives in a village in Tuscany created on the La Fratta estate in Sinalunga (SI). Wanting to earn honest money, he decides to carve a puppet. Mastro Ciliegia has exactly the piece of wood for him… Pinocchio. The Cat and the Wolf also stalk the estate and “snack” at the Osteria del Gambero Rosso, really the Casa di Nello, named after its last inhabitant and today a small rural museum.
The puppet follows every temptation he comes across, including the puppet theatre in the Teatro Cittadino of Noicattaro (Bari), the smallest Italian theatre in Europe. This marks the start of Pinocchio’s adventures: after fleeing from the sentimental Mangiafuoco, he comes across the Cat and the Wolf. The advice of the Talking Cricket, who appears suddenly from the enormous trunk of one of the many hundred-year old olive trees in the countryside of Ostuni (BR), falls on deaf ears. The Fairy with Turquoise Hair rescues Pinocchio, taking him to her ghostly domain, really Villa Soave in a park of oaks and elms in the midst of the Selva di Fasano (BR). Once he has recovered and she is sure he will return to his father’s search, the fairy lets him go: Pinocchio crosses the Ponte dell’Acquedotto in Gravina (BA), from where he catches a glimpse of the little church of Madonna della Stella but once again meets the Cat and the Wolf who convince him to plant the gold coins he received from Mangiafuoco in the Field of Miracles among the olive trees.
We see Pinocchio on the Ostuni coastline in Torre Pozzella and on the shore between Monopoli (BA) and Polignano a Mare. The arid countryside of the Murge region, between Altamura (BA), Gravina and Spinazzola (BT), becomes the seaside borgo known in the fable as the Island of Busy Bees. Here Pinocchio, saved and tended to again by the now adult Fairy in her new home – the Masseria Patrone in Altamura – attempts to finally become a sensible and thoughtful child. However, Candlewick easily convinces him to come to the Land of Toys, actually Masseria Sansone, a 18th century building in the Ostuni countryside, where he later becomes a donkey, is sold and thrown into the sea. Transformed back into a puppet, he ends up in the stomach of the Terrible Dogfish in the waters of Polignano a Mare (BA) where Geppetto finds him.
After escaping from the belly of the Terrible Dogfish, Pinocchio and Geppetto hide in a hut in the countryside around Villa Catena, a 16th century complex in Poli, between Tivoli and Palestrina 40 km east of Rome. Here Pinocchio finally becomes a boy.
