Sestri Levante, on the Ligurian Riviera di Levante, overlooks the Gulf of Tigullio, east of Genoa. The sea, fine sand beaches and its unusual geographical conformation have given the town the name of Città dei due mari (City of Two Seas).
The modern part of the town is found between the beach and the inland hills. The historical centre stretches out between the rocky promontory and the isthmus towards the sea, dividing the Baia delle Favole which holds the tourist marina from the smaller Baia del Silenzio.
The historical centre is home to the Palazzo Fascie Rossi, which houses the town library and archaeological museum and numerous traditional workshops and restaurants.
Overlooking the Baia del Silenzio is the 17th century Capuchin Church and Convent, which conserves ancient furnishings in polished walnut and a venerated sculpture of Mary Immaculate in a niche of the main altar.
Another place of outstanding beauty is the Convento dell’Annunziata (1469) built by the Dominican Fathers which stands on the cliffside at the very end of the peninsula. It houses a library, conferences halls, a great room, terraces and a garden.
