Santa Margherita Ligure is part of the city of Genoa and one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Ligurian Riviera di Levante. The city is in the innermost part of the Gulf of Tigullio. The activity of the city centres around the harbour, which is also an arrival point for fishing boats, luxury yachts and cruise ships. The local speciality is red prawns and local artisans are specialised in lace and macramé making.
Santa Margherita Ligure is made up of three hamlets. Paraggi extends between the centre of Santa Margherita and Portofino along the Dolphin Coast, where lush hills host noble villas and palaces. This former fishing village has now become a popular tourist destination with a busy beachside and nightlife.
Vegetation in Nozarego surrounds the 18th century parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta, also known as the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora del Carmine, whose forecourt is decorated with a Ligurian mosaic risseu, made of white, red and black pebbles. The area offers an extraordinary view over the Gulf of Tigullio.
4km from the urban centre, the hillside hamlet of San Lorenzo della Costa has characteristic terraced olive groves and the 13th century Church of San Lorenzo which houses an important Flemish triptych of St. Andrew.
