Alassio is a vibrant town on the Ligurian Riviera di Ponente (Coast of the Setting Sun) in the province of Savona. Originally a small fishing village, in the 1800s it became a popular holiday spot for English travellers who left their mark on its villas and parks. Today it is a busy tourist destination, attracting large numbers of visitors in the summer to its wide beaches which slope gently down to the sea. Another big draw is the glamour and vitality of its town life. There are many shopping streets, including the famous narrow road known as the “Budello” where elegant boutiques nestle alongside artisanal and local workshops.
The romantic Muretto di Alassio has become symbolic of the town and lead to it being known as the “City of lovers”. Every visitor to Alassio should taste the typical “baci” (kisses), hazelnut biscuits with a chocolate heart.
