Imperia owes its present configuration to the royal decree of 1923 that unified the municipalities of Oneglia and Porto Maurizio, divided by the Impero River which gives the city its name.
Oneglia, modern and industrial, stretches out along the coastline with the multi-coloured fishermen’s houses typical of the area. The architecture of the city has a strong Piedmontese influence and the most significant buildings include: Piazza Dante, with its Neoclassical colonnades; Palazzo Doria, birthplace of the Admiral Andrea Doria and the art deco Villa Grock, home to the Swiss clown Charles Adrien Wettach, whose stage name was Grock.
The ancient and picturesque area of Porto Maurizio stands on a promontory, its alleyways (known as “caruggi”) leading to the buildings of the medieval Parasio, such as the 18th century, Neoclassical Cathedral of St. Maurice, the biggest church in Liguria. The busiest area is the marina where the annual Vele d’Epoca di Imperia attracts fleets of classic yachts from all over the world.
