The religious centre of the city of Parma, Piazza Duomo conserves a pristine medieval atmosphere thanks to an evocative combination of architectural structures. These include the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, built from 1074 by the Bishop-Count Guibodo which houses the bas-reliefs of Benedetto Antelami, artefacts of Romanesque art and the grand frescoes of Antonio Allegri, known as il Correggio. Nearby is the tall 13th century bell tower in terracotta and the octagonal Baptistery in pink Verona marble, an example of early Gothic style whose four vertical loggias have architrave openings.
The majestic Palazzo del Vescovado, originally from the 11th century, with its courtyard of Renaissance style loggias, completes the picture. The palace is the seat of the Diocesan Museum which documents the spread of Christianity in the city from the Roman period, with early Christian artefacts, coins, Roman reliefs and High Medieval ceramics.
