The heart of the town of Forlì, Piazza Saffi is located at the crossroads of the four main throughfares. Trapezoid in form, it is 128m long and 87m wide. Partly outside the city in ancient times, it was known as the “the Abbot’s field” because the land belonged to the Abbot of San Mercuriale.
Important historic buildings lining the square include: Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo del Podestà, Palazzo Albertini, Palazzo del Credito Romagnolo, Basilica di San Mercuriale, Palazzo delle Poste e dei Telegrafi. At the centre of the square is the monument to Aurelio Saffi created by sculptor Filippo Cifariello from Naples and inaugurated in 1921; it was rebuilt after being destroyed by a bomb in 1944.
