Piazza Garibaldi is the beating heart of Parma. The city’s civic centre, it rose here almost as if in contrast to the religious centre of piazza Duomo just hundreds of metres to the north-west. Over the centuries, the main forms of municipal power have been established in this area of the city.
The 13th century Palazzo Comunale dominates the south eastern side: restructured between 1623 and 1673, it was restructured in Renaissance style and a portico was annexed. The Governor’s Palace, which already existed in the 13th century, was added later, dominating the northern side: today it features the restructuration work done by the French architect Petitot in 1760: a Baroque tower with a sundial stands in the centre of the structure. To the west of the square is the Church of St. Peter, with a neoclassical façade also designed by Petitot.
Today the open-air tables, surrounding pedestrian streets and elegant shops make the piazza a favourite gathering place for the city’s residents.
