Rectangular piazza Antonio Fontanesi, with its linden trees and porticoes on two sides, is one of the most characteristic squares in the historical centre of Reggio Emilia. It was established in 1783 following demolition of the block where houses, a convent and the parish Church of St Mary Magdalen once stood. In the late 1800s the tall trees that characterise it to this day were planted and the square was named after the painter from the city, Antonio Fontanesi. On Tuesdays and Fridays, the site hosts the traditional fruit and vegetable market. On the northern side are the “Braccia reggiane”, measuring units useful for exchanges of merchandise on market days: the cobbled floor down the west side recalls the course of the Canale del Guazzatoio that once flowed there open to the sky and fed the numerous factories concentrated in this area of the city.
