Piazza della Pomposa in Modena takes its name from the church dedicated to Santa Maria della Pomposa, once a dependency of the more famous Abbey of Pomposa near Comacchio which was founded in the 9th century. The square still has the same appearance as in the 18th century, even if the surrounding urban spaces have been modified and now host events and entertainment activities of great interest. "Casa Tassoni", at number 89, is an example of a typical Renaissance Modenese home.
The square also features the complex of the aedes muratoriana - Muratorian aedes, which includes the home of Ludovico Antonio Muratori, a 17th -18th century scholar and intellectual considered the father of Italian historiography, and priest of the adjacent church of Santa Maria Pomposa, one of the oldest in the city, from 1716 until his death.
