An example of late Baroque architecture in Lazio built by the Ponam family in the early 1700s, Villa Ponam is located near the hamlet of Case San Benedetto, 2km from the centre of Rieti.
The building has an articulated layout on a semicircle facing the Rieti valley: two lines of cypress trees, now centuries old, frame the elegant façade with elliptical oculi that provide light for the ground floor entrance rooms and those beneath the roof. The simpler, more linear, rear façade, with a central portion that is higher than the front, is equally elegant. The remains of the old perimeter wall and gate can still be seen. The main salon on the first floor is decorated with plasterwork featuring allegorical figures and cherubs holding garlands; at the base of the ceiling vault is a cornice resting on double columns with eclectic capitols that decorates the perimeter of the room.
