Description

The Nepi Aqueduct (VT) is a work of hydraulic engineering built at two different times in history. Even the famous architect Vignola was involved, albeit unsuccessfully (1559-1563), in its construction which began in the second half of the 16th century and was finally completed between 1702 and 1727. It extends three miles from the source, known as “La Botte”, in Varano to the city walls.

Although a good part of the conduits is now underground, the area dubbed The Arches in their honour features 36 classically inspired arches (285m with a height of approx. 20m) used to bridge the valley carved out by the Falisco river, close to the bastion of the fortifications built by Antonio Sangallo the Elder.

Famous film scenes featuring the aqueduct include the opening sequences of Monicelli’s For Love and Gold (L’Armata Brancaleone, 1966) which despite being set in the Middle Ages used the 18th-century structure as the perfect backdrop.
