Known locally as Civita, the Acropolis of Alatri is located on the peak of the hill where Alatri (FR) is situated, in the town’s historical centre about 500m above sea level. It is encircled by Cyclopean walls built of layers of irregularly-shaped, massive boulders that perfectly interlock without the use of plasters or cements, their perimeter forming an outline in the shape of a trapezoid about 19,000 m2. There are two entry gates – Porta Maggiore on the southern edge, which is 4.5m high and 2.7m wide and Porta Minore to the north, 2.12m tall and 1.2m wide – and an access ramp which once had a portico – dating to the second half of the second century BCE - at its base, now in ruins. The Co-Cathedral of St. Paul and bishopric stand on these ruins.
