The Marcigliana Nature Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Rome. It is located on the northern outskirts of the city, just outside the ring road, between the consular roads via Salaria and via Nomentana. The landscape extends over 4,000 hectares and is mostly agricultural: low, round hills with extensive cultivations or grazing areas rise alongside valleys whose slopes are covered with patches of undergrowth.
The large estates (Marcigliana, Tor San Giovanni) are distinguished by the presence of ancient farmhouses, often built on the sites of Roman villas, and medieval towers. This area was the site of the ancient Latin city of Crustumerium whose defensive wall controlled an ancient thoroughfare that linked Etruria and Campania.
