Built during Norman times on a steep rocky spur, Caccamo Castle (PA) was a feudal fortress and in 1160 served as a refuge for the barons who had rebelled against Angevin rule. The first iteration of the castle was probably a watch-tower, with modification and additions during the following centuries. It belonged to some of the most noble families of Sicily: Chiaramonte, Prades, Cabrera, Henriquez, Amato, and then the De Spuches in the 19th century who bequeathed it to the Region in 1963. Damaged by a landslide and an earthquake tremor, it was recently restored.
A long staircase leads to the castle. Of particular interest are the prisons, whose walls still bear prisoners’ graffiti, the armoury, a drawing room with a late Renaissance ceiling and the dining room with 17th century frescoes.
