Now owned by the municipality, the restored Manfredonico Castle was built in 1364 by the Chiaramonte family on an isolated rock that dominates the territory a couple of kilometres from the village of Mussomeli (CL). The merlons, double windows, little cylindrical towers, portal and ornate windows on the façade make it a particularly representative example of Gothic style. An ogival arched door provides access to the interior where there are interesting rooms with cross vaults; the Barons room; the “cammara di li tri donni” (the three women’s room) which demonstrates the refinement of areas intended for female use; the prigione della morte (prison of death) where prisoners were dropped through a manhole to die by drowning; and the chapel which holds a statue of Our Lady of the Chain whom the prisoners implored for mercy, plus triangular areas used to join rooms and staircases.
