Rising on a hill, the medieval Castle of Sperlinga is reached by a steep staircase dug from the rock which leads to the watchtower. It was probably built under Norman domination between the 11th and 12th centuries on the ruins of an Arab fortification. The castle’s ancient glory can be glimpsed in the remains of its walls with the marks of a drawbridge and a double window, today considered a national monument. A vestibule leads into the structure. Some of the rooms are dug out of the rock and today have no roof, while others are positioned at the sides of the rock at different heights.
Built in the 18th century facing the main building, the Church of the Madonna della Mercede is on castle territory, and englobed into the external perimeter walls.
At the foot of the castle is the urban centre of Sperlinga (EN), established in the 17th century to expand the existing medieval borgo.
