Commissioned in 1317 by Prince Francesco I of Ventimiglia, the Castle of Castelbuono (PA) combined a variety of styles: its “cubic” shape evokes Arabic architecture, the four, square corner towers and merlons are in Norman style while the cylindrical tower is typical of Swabian military architecture.
The original appearance of the building is hidden behind the numerous interventions obvious in the present-day building. Extending out in a square floor plan, it was accessed by a double staircase through a pointed portal. Inside are richly decorated rooms with carved and decorated ceilings and Gothic windows and doors. The Baroque Chapel of St. Anne is located on the piano nobile, built in 1683 by brothers Giuseppe and Gicaomo Serpotta with marble, plasterwork, cupids and friezes.
The restored rooms house the civic museum, which has four sections: urbanism, archaeology, sacred art, contemporary art.
