Carini Castle (PA) was built between the end of the 11th and the early 12th century atop an Arab construction by the first Norman feudal ruler, Rodolfo Bonello, a knight in Count Ruggiero’s entourage. Modified many times over the centuries, recent restoration interventions have revealed the multiple layers of architectural styles applied.
The sober and austere external appearance is typical of the Middle Ages; there are traces of the first city wall in the ancient borgo that surrounds the castle while Arab-Norman elements can still be seen in the pointed arch of the second door of the fortress.
Inside, various rooms are frescoed in pale colours. The ground floor holds a room with a cross vault, a room with no flooring where it is possible to see the foundations of the previous buildings and a large drawing room divided by pointed arches with a central column: the eastern side has a frescoed chapel with a wooden tabernacle from the early 1600s. The upper floor has a 15th century ballroom with coffered wooden ceiling, fireplace and wide windows.
