A very interesting example of Alpine fortified architecture, Pietra Castle, in Calliano (Trento) was built on the peak of a rocky mass, less for residential purposes than as a fort for defensive use to provide a southern bulwark for the city of Trento. The 13th century tower is dominant with other fortified structures added in later eras.
The castle interiors also provide elements of interest: e.g., the frescoed walls of the Judgment hall from the second half of the 15th century, likely by the Venetian school, which depict scenes of medieval life, with hunting and courtly themes.
