The beautiful Sant’Agata di Puglia stands at 800m above sea level on the border with Campania, offering a breath-taking view over the entire territory of Daunia. Recipient of the prestigious Orange Flag awarded by the Italian Touring Club, the town resembles a small stone nativity scene, unfolding down the slope of the hill and dominated by the imposing Imperial Castle, perched in the highest part of the town, with the remnants of the town walls and its original towers. The entire historical centre is the heart of the Parco Urbano delle Opere in Pietra (Urban Park of Works in Stone): an outdoor, extended museum which includes alleyways, houses and characteristic portals, decorated with heraldic coats of arms. Buildings overlooking the winding alleys include the Baroque Church of St. Nicholas and the Church of St. Andrew, which contains two precious red stone altars, and the elegant palaces of Volpe, Torraca, Vinciguerra and Barbato. The farming history of the village lives on in the well-preserved 16th century oil press. The town is surrounded by lush vegetation and many archaeological artefacts, such as the ruins of the Roman Bridge on River Calaggio.
